Opposition Spokesman on Northern Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald, is calling on local residents across Queensland to get their hands dirty and support Australia’s biggest community tree-planting event - National Tree Day.
Senator Macdonald said that National Tree Day will take place on Sunday, July 27, with a Schools Tree Day on July 25.
“Having been the Minister for Forestry, I am well aware of how important trees are for our world, from absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, providing habitat for our native creatures and giving people a relaxing and beautiful environment in which to live.
“Since National Tree Day started in 1996, more than 1.8 million volunteers have planted nearly 12 million native trees at over 20,000 locations Australia-wide.
“Planet Ark started National Tree Day to educate and to recruit Australians to care for our environment.
“By taking part in National Tree Day, community members can become actively involved in the care and preservation of our wonderful landscape in the most practical way possible.
“I urge as many people as possible to take part in National Tree Day. As a community, we need to work together for our world, and our contribution will help Planet Ark reach its target of planting one million trees and shrubs” Senator Macdonald said.
