Northern Based Liberal Senator, Ian Macdonald, will today be sworn in for his fourth, 6 year term as a Senator for Queensland.
Senator Macdonald, who lives in Ayr, has his principle office in Townsville but also travels widely in far north, north-west and central Queensland.
He is a former Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government and Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation and was also Parliamentary Secretary to the Environment Minister.
Senator Macdonald is currently the Opposition Spokesman on Northern Australia and Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader, Dr Nelson.
Senator Macdonald has led the Liberal Party ticket in each election since he was fist elected in 1990, and last year lead the joint Liberal National Senate Team at the election.
The election last year saw the Liberal National team achieve the greatest number of votes of any Senate Team, which results in Senator Macdonald being sworn in first of all Queensland Senators at today’s swearing in.
Senator Macdonald said he was proud to be able to again serve the people of Queensland in the ‘States house’ for the next 6 years.
"I am particularly keen to continue my passion for Northern Australia.
“In the North we have only about 6 per cent of the population, but we produce over 30 percent of Australia’s export earnings.
“We have never received back from Federal or State Governments anywhere near our fair share of the revenue.
I am excited about the prospect of the north becoming the food bowl of not only Australia, but Asia as well.
“We have the land, the soil, the water and the pioneering energy to feed the nation - all we need is the right leadership from Governments and the north will feed the nation” Senator Macdonald said.
