MACDONALD RE-APPOINTED TO TURNBULL’S TEAM

22 September, 2008
North Queensland based Liberal Senator Ian Macdonald has been re-appointed to the Coalition front bench as Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader Malcolm Turnbull, with special responsibility for Northern Australia.
Senator Macdonald continues the role as Opposition Spokesman for Northern Australia as appointed by the former leader, Dr Brendan Nelson.
In Government, Senator Macdonald was the Federal Minister for Fisheries Forestry and Conservation, the Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, and Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment.
Senator Macdonald lives in Ayr and maintains his electorate office in Townsville.
“I am delighted with my re-appointment. There is so much to do to advance the cause of Northern Australia, where more than a third of Australia’s export wealth originates.
“There are many social and infrastructure problems that need to be addressed in the North and it will be my goal over the next two years to develop Opposition policy to highlight the opportunities and needs of Northern Australia.
“I am also delighted that my colleague Peter Lindsay, the member for the Townsville based seat of Herbert, has been re-appointed to the shadow Ministry as Parliamentary Secretary for Defence.
“The importance of the Defence establishments in Northern Australia, not only to the defence of our country but also to the northern economy, can never be underestimated.
“It is particularly important that Peter and I continue to play a role in the development of Opposition policy that is so important to the north.
“This compares with Labor that effectively has no northern Minister in its front bench line up.
“I am honoured to be invited to continue playing a role in the alternative Government” Senator Macdonald said.
