MR TURNOUR DOES NOT SUPPORT PENSIONERS

24 September, 2008
The Member for Leichhardt, Mr Jim Turnour has shown his true colours when it comes to supporting pensioners in his electorate, by refusing to support the Coalitions bill to introduce an immediate payment of $30 extra per week for pensioner as it will be taken up by nursing home fees.
North Queensland Liberal Senator, Ian Macdonald, today slammed Mr Turnour for turning his back on pensioners who are in desperate need of an increase now, rather than after another review by the Rudd Government.
“Mr Turnour has had ample opportunity to speak up for the pensioners in his electorate who are barely able to survive on the current pension, yet we hear in an interview yesterday (23/9/08) that they already had received $500 in July so they don’t need immediate relief.
“The Coalitions policy is a real solution to an immediate problem. It is not an entire solution, but it will provide relief at a time when the stress of just putting food on the table is at all time high for those on the pension.
“I call on Mr Turnour to take some real action and support the Coalition in its aim to help the pensioners of Cairns and surrounds, rather than trying to justify himself through flawed arguments” Senator Macdonald said.
