BLIGH MUST ACT ON CROCODILES

30 October, 2008

It is time for the Premier, Anna Bligh, to exercise her authority and take over the crocodile problem in North Queensland. Northern based Senator, Ian Macdonald, who has been campaigning for three years now for a safer regime for crocodiles, said that it was clear now neither the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nor the Environment Minister Andrew McNamara, could be trusted with people’s lives and what is increasingly becoming a major economic concern.

“Already one life has been lost because of EPA stupidity, and now small businessmen are losing their livelihoods because of the crocodile menace around Townsville,” Senator Macdonald said.

“No rational person can believe that the EPA would remove a dangerous reptile from Cape York to the Houghton River – a mecca for Townsville and Burdekin fishermen.”

“The rationale for this move escapes everyone. And reports of cavalier responses from the Minister’s office and the EPA to the plight of small businessmen already struggling with the financial crisis and the tourism fall back, requires the Premier to intervene and take charge of a new crocodile management plan that moves crocodiles away from places where people congregate,” said Senator Macdonald.

“The Environment Minister should be sacked and heads should roll at the EPA,” Senator Macdonald said.
