The announcement that the Federal Government will provide 550 Local Councils in Australia with $300 million for minor community work is good news.
Opposition Spokesman for Northern Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald, said that in giving money direct to Councils Mr Rudd was wisely copying John Howard yet again.
“One of the most significant programmes ever for Local Government was the Roads to Recovery Programme which took money direct from the Commonwealth Government and gave to Local Government.”
“The grants of $300million should be distributed in the same way so that the various State Governments do not rake off a share of the grants” Senator Macdonald said.
