ETS AMENDMENTS

26 November, 2009

In the Senate on Wednesday I voted against the Labor Party in support of referring the proposed amendments to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme to a Senate Committee for further intensive investigation and assessment.

I also voted against the Labor Party to defer until after Copenhagen, a resolution on the CPRS.  Regrettably in both cases I was not successful.

I am currently assessing the impact of amendments on regional Queensland.  It is clear that the amendments won on agriculture will keep farmers out of the penalties of an Emissions Trading Scheme but will allow them to generate additional income from Carbon Sequestration.

I am conscious of the endorsement of the National Farmers Federation for amendments as they relate to agriculture.  Food Processing will be better off.

As well the money won for coalminers and aluminum producers will cushion job losses in regional Queensland.

I have appreciated the comments made by many people telephoning, emailing, and writing to me on this issue.  Certainly arguments from both sides of the debate are helpful in assessing where the emissions trading debate will end.
