The Prime Minister should use his visit to Townsville to explain to workers at the Queensland Nickel refinery at Yabulu how his Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme will impact on their jobs.
Opposition Spokesman on Northern Australia Senator Ian Macdonald said that it was time for Mr Rudd to come clean on the true cost of the ETS.
“Mr Rudd’s ETS is going to hurt North Queenslanders far more than it will hurt most Australians.
“The workers at the Yabulu refinery are just one group that stand to lose their jobs and their livelihoods.
“Following the announcement by QNI bosses last month that the ETS could force the closure of the Yabulu refinery I questioned Climate Change Minister Penny Wong in the Senate, her responses were hardly reassuring.
“I am calling on Mr Rudd to meet with these hard working Queenslanders, and explain to them why his ETS is more important than their jobs” Senator Macdonald said.
