The newly appointed Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Remote Australia has pledged to develop policies to give real opportunities to remote Australians.
North Queensland based Liberal Senator Ian Macdonald said that Indigenous Australians living in remote areas have few opportunities to develop and share the good life which most Aussies enjoy.
"Lack of infrastructure like roads and communication networks means there are few prospects of real jobs and a satisfying part in Australia’s growth and development" Senator Macdonald said.
"There are real prospects in cultural tourism but you need to be able to get international tourists in and out of remote areas
“That's why I am so passionate about the Outback Way joining Cairns and Townsville to Perth across the centre of Australia.
“Such a road will open up remote tourism and provide meaningful employment opportunities for Indigenous people.
“Better communications are also essential and I am disappointed that many remote Australians will have to wait for years to get connected to the new National Broadband Network, while many more will miss out completely.
“The Coalitions Opel proposal for high speed broadband would have had remote Australians connected by now and seen fewer people miss out.
“Good roads and communications will help all residents of remote Australia and will bring a better way of life and more mining and commercial opportunities" Senator Macdonald said.
Senator Macdonald was appointed as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Northern and Remote Australia in today’s front bench reshuffle announced by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.
