COALITION PLAN TO OVERTURN WILD RIVERS LAWS IN THE CAPE

12 January, 2010

While visiting Cairns today, the Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has announced plans to overturn the Queensland Government’s Wild Rivers Legislation in so far as it impacts on Cape York.

Opposition Spokesman on Northern and Remote Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed the announcement saying that it is crucial for the economic development of the Cape and to help improve outcomes for Aboriginal people living in remote communities.

“Providing economic opportunities to people living in remote communities, particularly those on the Cape, is essential when it comes to improving services in these areas.

“The Wild Rivers legislation being forced upon the people of Cape York by the Queensland Government is unacceptable and will only serve to place those in the remote communities of the Cape at a further disadvantage.

“The Coalition understands just how unique the eco-systems and waterways of Cape York are and supports the development of sustainable, environmentally responsible business ventures in the region.

“Such business ventures would provide employment and help bring essential services closer to Aboriginal people in the remote communities.

“I am proud to be in Cairns with Tony Abbott and Warren Entsch standing up for the people of Cape York on this vitally important issue.

Mr Abbott plans to introduce a private members bill to overturn the Wild Rivers legislation when parliament resumes in February.
