The Labor Party in North Queensland is in disarray after the announcement by Dawson MP James Bidgood that he will not be recontesting the Mackay based seat.
North Queensland based Liberal Senator and Dawson constituent Ian Macdonald said that he feels the lack of action by Mr Bidgood to oppose the Rudd Governments Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) had contributed to his decision.
“There is a clear sentiment in the electorate that Mr Bidgood didn’t do enough to oppose the Rudd Government’s ETS, a scheme which would be disastrous for the mining industry that contribute so heavily to the communities of Dawson,” said Senator Macdonald.
“Prime Minister Rudd’s popularity, which helped give Mr Bidgood a 12 percent swing in 2007, has plummeted in Dawson as he continues on his campaign to destroy jobs and industries in the North with the ETS.
“The constant Labor spin on ETS has done little to assure the people of Dawson, while the Coalition’s Climate Policy together with the Liberal National Party’s selection of candidate George Christensen have both been very well received by the electorate.
“I wish James all the best in his future endeavours, a favourable outcome to his health complaints and trust that his future is aligned with a more positive group of people,” said Senator Macdonald.
