Opposition Spokesman on Northern and Remote Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald is in Kununurra today at the request of local Federal MP Barry Haase to re-affirm the Coalitions commitment to development in Northern Australia.
Senator Macdonald said that irrigation schemes like the Ord prove that large scale agriculture can transform Northern communities.
“The Ord River scheme was dismissed by so many at it’s inception but has proven to be a reliable and productive agricultural region,” said Senator Macdonald.
“Chia is one of the exciting new crops which are making their mark in the Ord.
“Barry Haase has been a constant advocate for this new industry and I’m pleased to note industry representatives will soon be demonstrating the future of Chia to Parliamentarians in Canberra.
“It’s pleasing to see the confidence in the Ord and the momentum being created by the Barnett Government’s huge investment in the area and the Commonwealths contribution which was promised by the Howard Government prior to the last election and delivered by the current Federal Government.
“The enthusiasm and initiative of people in the East Kimberly will ensure that in the years to come the Ord will be a major supplier of food to Australia and the world.
“The Brumbies Bakery initiative with Chia is a major boost for the Ord, and the promotion of this healthy omega 3 cereal additive will do much for the health of Australians and in the future in developing countries.
“With Barry Haase’s help I am developing for the Coalition a range of policies for Northern Australia which will be put to the Australian public prior to the next Federal election later this year.
“Every time I visit the Ord I give thanks for the vision of Liberal Prime Minister Bob Menzies all those decades ago.
