A Senate Committee was told yesterday that 18 houses promised for the small Indigenous township of Napranum near Weipa would be built as promised by June 30 even though not one sod of soil had yet been turned.
Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Northern and Remote Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald said that this was another example of what is fast becoming Mr Rudd’s trademark.
“Make a grandiose promise which excites the community, but have little ability to deliver as promised.
“Add Napranum houses to the list of broken promises,” Senator Macdonald said.
Mayor of Napranum Shire Cr Roy Chevathen, told the Senate Committee on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities that the community was frustrated by the lack of action from the Government.
Cr Chevathen said the Council wanted to build all 18 houses to employ locals, but the Government reluctantly allowed them only five.
The Mayor told the Committee that the council had identified the land on which the new houses could be built but they have had no word back from the Government.
This mirrors the situation in other Indigenous communities and demonstrates yet again that the Rudd Government is all spin and no substance.
