New Home Buyers Slugged by Rudd's Ongoing NBN Fiasco

19 April, 2010

Evidence given at today’s Senate Committee Hearing on the Fibre Deployment Bill by the Housing Industry Association and the Urban Development Institute shows the Rudd Government’s ongoing mismanagement in the NBN saga will impact most heavily on housing affordability.

It is first home buyers and those re-establishing in new sub-divisions who will be slugged an additional "tax" to connect up to a network that most other Australians will get for free.

And many of those will be forced to pay the cost of very advanced technology which most will never use.

The hypocrisy of the Rudd Government is again to the fore.

On the one hand they pontificate about affordable housing.  And then on the other they increase the cost of a new house by anything between $2000 and $5000 thus making housing less affordable.

In Townsville for example, existing home owners will get connected to the NBN for free; for new home buyers the cost could be another $5000 to the price of their new dwelling

Mr Rudd has been caught out yet again. He cannot deliver on one promise without breaking another. Don’t be fooled by the spin, this is yet another example of the Rudd/Labor pattern of failure.
