A COALITION GOVERNMENT TO REFORM &
RECONSTITUTE NORTHERN TASKFORCE
The Coalition has committed to reforming and reconstituting the Northern Australia Land and Water Taskforce if they are returned to government at the next election.
Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Northern and Remote Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald today announced that a Coalition Government would reform and reconstitute the Northern Australia Land and Water Taskforce to examine all aspects of northern development including water storage, a key component left out of the Labor Government’s review.
Speaking
at the Northern Outback Development Forum in Normanton, Senator Macdonald said
“Today I give you a commitment on behalf of Tony Abbott and the Coalition that
upon being returned to Government the Northern Australia Land and Water
Taskforce will be reformed and reconstituted with advocates passionate about
the North, including a predominance of board members whose futures are in the
north.
“The
new taskforce will be tasked with proactively examining sustainable development
in the north and advising the government specifically (but not exclusively) on
water storage and usage for food production across the whole of Northern
Australia,” Senator Macdonald said.
“The
Coalition recognizes food security will be a major challenge throughout the
next century; the development of Northern Australia must be at the forefront of
any solution to feed Australia and the world into the future,” he said.
