The Labor Party’s anti northern “out of sight out of mind” approach is again demonstrated by State and Federal Labor Governments looking the other way while mangroves are ripped out to improve the view from another lavishly funded State Government Park in Brisbane.
Federal Opposition Spokesman on Northern and Remote Australia Senator Ian Macdonald said that 15 years ago Labor State and Federal Governments hounded the developers of the Port Hinchinbrook Marina at Cardwell to stop mangroves being removed.
“But today not a squeak from the Queensland Government or Federal Environment Minister Garrett, as mangroves are removed and pruned so that “coffee drinkers get a better view” from Brisbane’s South Bank redevelopment.
“It must make a difference if it’s a Labor Government development in Brisbane as opposed to a private development in Cardwell”
“Labor will throw any amount of money at marginal seats in Brisbane and ignore inconvenient conservation rules where it suits their purpose”
“But for North Queensland to have a safe Marina venue, the Federal Government couldn’t have been more strident in imposing all sorts of rules to stop the development which helped the economy of the small northern town of Cardwell and provided safe anchorage to passing marine craft.
“The Coalition believes in a fair go for Northern Australia and our record shows it. The Labor Party are only interested in the populous capital city voters and this decision today shows that when it comes to something the State Labor Government wants to do, Federal Labor will look the other way”
