Suggestions from the online newsletter Crikey that the Mooney Campaign is organising workers to pose as Greens supporters and hand out misleading how-to-vote cards to try to fool green voters is a disgrace and must be investigated by AEC officials.
Townsville based Liberal National Party Senator Ian Macdonald said the Shepardson Royal Commission showed that Labor has form in Townsville when it comes to voting irregularities.
“Tony Mooney was one of those mentioned in Shepardson’s enquiry and although found not to be directly involved, certainly a member of the party close to him and a councillor in Labor’s Council Team was jailed for being involved in electoral rorts,” Senator Macdonald said.
“I call upon Mr Mooney to guarantee there will be no Labor supporters, paid or otherwise, masquerading as green campaigners.”
“This election must be fought fairly and any form of misleading or dishonest vote seeking should be condemned.”
“The Labor party must clearly identify any how-to-vote cards they distribute on Polling Day,” Senator Macdonald said.
