Northern Australia has swung back to the Coalition with stunning victories evident as counting progressed last night.
Coalition spokesman on Northern and Remote Australia Senator Ian Macdonald said northerners had felt neglected by the Gillard/Rudd Government.
It seemed to be a case of out of sight out of mind for the North - with Labor not even issuing a credible Northern Australian Policy during the campaign.
I congratulate Warren Entsch, Ewen Jones, George Christensen, Ken O’Dowd and Natasha Griggs on stunning wins and Barry Haase for overwhelming opponents from all sides to comfortably hold the new Western Australian seat of Durack.
Michelle Landry also recorded significant swings in the safe Labor seat of Capricornia.
While counting still continues in close seats it appears that of the nine seats north of the tropic of Capricorn in the federal parliament, the Coalition will now hold six including the three across the top of Australia.
The new government of whatever persuasion must recognise and deliver for those Australians choosing to live and work in the land of opportunity that is Northern Australia.
