Bob Katter’s decision to back the Coalition means that seven out of nine Northern Members of Parliament support Tony Abbott for Prime Minister.
Coalition Spokesman for Northern and Remote Australia Senator Ian Macdonald said that clearly Northerners will be dismayed at the reinstatement of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister.
“I am proud of clarity of thought shown by Northern Australia’s voters who understood the real issues confronting Australia and rejected Labor,” Senator Macdonald said.
“It is a great disappointment to me that we will not be in a position now to implement the broad range of policies for the North we enunciated prior to the election which, with the policies proposed by Bob Katter, would have meant a lot for us up in the North of Australia.
I am confident that at the next election the two remaining Labor seats (Capricornia and Lingiari) will fall to the Coalition in a landslide.
